The Resting Place

A Soldier's Story

They say I served my country well,
and they would always remember.
But when I'm sick, and seek their help,
all I hear is take a number.

When I was called off to war,
this I did proudly and willingly.
But the dreams I have night after night,
are ever so slowly killing me.

People say it's been so long,
that it's best you just forget.
But till the battles are won,
and ALL come home.
The war isn't over, NO not yet!

The battles were fought in a country so green,
with hills that reached the sky.
The toll is so great and still unpaid,
but why must we ALL die.

When the records are read on judgment day,
there's one thing I'd like them to tell.
When this soldier died he went to heaven,
for he spent his time in HELL.
